How are You Feeling Today?

A group of young children, both boys and girls, are seated on colorful chairs in what appears to be a classroom or daycare setting, with various toys and educational materials visible in the background.

Early Learning Center students in Ms. Jennifer Jenning's class participated in a social emotional lesson (SEL) about feelings with Social Worker Ms. Rosio DiMaso.

The students began their morning with the "Hello" song, singing and saying "hello" to their classmates and teacher.

Ms. DiMaso brought several toys into the classroom that resembled different feelings and the students were asked to select one of the toys based on how they were feeling at the moment.

The students then did a breathing exercise in which they held up an imaginary candle, gently inhaling and blowing out the candle. They practiced this exercise a few times.

Ms. DiMaso then showed the students jars with characters on them that represented different feelings.

She selected one, asked the students to tell her what feeling it was and then called on each of them to place the jar on the felt board at the front of the class.

The class then watched a short video about a turtle who gets angry when he doesn't get his way.

The students learned about different things they can do when they get mad.

They learned to first, recognize their feelings, second, stop their body and third, tuck inside their shell and take three deep breaths.

All of the students enjoyed a morning talking about and learning about the best way to handle their feelings.
